The Main Event

vyengaged-26_YVFounded in 1543 by Spanish conquistadors, the city of Santiago de los Caballeros served as the seat of the military governor of the Spanish colony of Guatemala—a large region that included almost all of present-day Central America and part of Mexico—for over 200 years. In 1717, an estimated 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit the capital, destroying over 3,000 buildings and much of the city’s architecture. In 1773, another series of earthquakes destroyed much of the rest of the town, leading authorities to move the capital to where the modern capital of Guatemala now stands. The Spanish crown ordered citizens to abandon the badly damaged city of Santiago de los Caballeros, which was thereafter referred to as La Antigua Guatemala or “the Old Guatemala.”

Now commonly referred to simply as Antigua, the beautifully preserved colonial town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its Spanish Baroque buildings, many of which have been left in their 18th-century post-earthquake ruins. Nestled between three volcanoes—one of which is currently active—Antigua’s cobble-stone streets, bougainvillea bursting from crumbling ruins, and pastel facades under terracotta roofs charmed us into choosing this gorgeous setting for our dream wedding.
